“I have long observed that the act of writing is viewed, by some, as an elite and otherworldly act, all the more so if a person isn’t paid for what she writes.” — Joyce Maynard

Today marks my blogoversary… I’ve been blogging for one year. It’s fitting that I’m off this evening to the BlogHer conference in San Jose. I have the honor of speaking on a panel about how blogging has transformed my life. Where do I start?

Blogging has become my extra-curricular obsession the past twelve months. Jeanine calls Sitting Pretty my mistress and this experience brought about the birth of its love child: Queercents. Blogging has given me purpose in the wee hours (we all have to wake up for something) not to mention a creative outlet.

When I started I was just looking for a project. The gay-marriage documentary that I co-produced in 2003/04 was a bust and I wanted something independent of my career that I could work on. I started a new job traveling internationally and it severely limited my ability to join anything that required regular commitment. I tried joining a book club at Borders, but I couldn’t even keep that date and it was only once a month. I gave up my yoga class. I needed a hobby that I could do as a road warrior.

So I decided to write. The topic of money actually seemed irrelevant at the beginning. I just needed a theme that was broad enough to keep the thoughts flowing. And daily they still seem to flow. Some days better than others, but quantity sometimes is better than quality.

I’ve published 200 posts with over 75,000 visits to Sitting Pretty and with another 7,500 visits here. I’ve created a “body of work” around the theme of money and I leveraged this experience to launch something more community (LGBT) oriented with Queercents.

It’s been a lovely journey to say the least. Writing isn’t as lonely as one might think… since it would have never happened without you, my kind readers. So thank you for a wonderful first year of blogging!
