This next week surfgirl and I will be flying to Augusta, GA to check the city out, my possible job transfer location, enjoying the ocean and hanging out with her brother and his partner.

We were looking at apartments and houses for rent if we were to move down there. Currently we rent a 1 bedroom that allows us to save money and we don’t feel we have to hide from the neighbors as much here in Colorado. However, since we don’t know Augusta that well and we are walking into the Baptist Bible belt, we have considereda two bedroom apartment to use as a ‘cover’ for any unexpected friendly people showing up. There is a downside to this:

1. This is an added unnecessary expense to our budget

2. The extra floor space makes, with what little furniture we have, the apartment sparse

3. Extra space evolves into the ‘necessity’ to fill it and causes more unnecessary expenses

However, many times the safety and cover of being “just roommates” can outweigh this expense. Until we find a gay district of the city or become more comfortable with the area, this may be one of two options.

Another option is renting a home, which are comparable to the apartments. This looks to be a great idea in that we have our seclusion and multiple bedrooms, in case. The only downside is that the land owner may not be agreeable to having two women of our age living in the same house. Though they aren’t supposed to discriminate, it happens. That is one appealing option for renting apartments as they see more roommate situations and are generally more open. Generally.

We are still deciding on this and will know more once we spend time in the city. One thing we do know is that the initial place we move into will affect our budget more than we would like, but sometimes the expense is worth the safety.
