Disneyland will welcome guests to ‘œdiscover the enchantment of Disney with the Sparkle of Pride!’ Every year, thousands of LGBTQ tourists flock to Disney theme parks around the world to celebrate the unofficial ‘œGay Days‘ events. These well-attended yearly celebrations were unofficial and organized by independent parties.

Observing the increasing LGBTQ interest and most-likely recognizing the opportunity to cash in, Disney has finally endorsed an LGBTQ Pride event. It’s called ‘œMagical Pride,’ and it’s scheduled to begin on June 1, 2019, at Disneyland Paris.

Magical Pride will reportedly involve an official ‘œMagical March of Diversity Parade’ alongside DJs, special live music performances and other events and photo opportunities. These Paris events will be competing with One Magical Weekend Events in Orlando as they focus on the “Red Shirt” crowd and plan to have a host hotel.

The park’s decision to finally host an official LGBTQ Pride event comes 28 years after the first Disney Gay Days in 1991, during which 3,000 gay and lesbian visitors from central Florida attended the Disney World theme park. The first unofficial Magical Pride event reportedly occurred in Disneyland Paris in 2014.

Years and Years, Boy George, and Corine to Headline Disneyland Paris Magical Pride 2019

A synth-pop band from the UK who’s known for bangers such as ‘œKing’ and ‘œShine’, Disney has picked a fantastic headliner with these guys. Olly Alexander, the leader singer, is well known for his advocacy and campaigning around mental health problems and safer sex in the LGBT+ community. An 80s French Disco Pop queen, Corine, is also set to perform. The legendary Boy George will be playing a DJ set to the rainbow-lit backdrop of the Tower of Terror. This icon is definitely going to bring the party and be a popular hit amongst attendees of all ages.

Disney has warmed up to its LGBTQ fans over time. It hasn’t featured an openly gay character in any of its major film releases but we see some progress being made.

Andi Mack became the first live-action Disney Channel show to have an openly LGBTQ recurring character. Disney also featured a lesbian same-sex couple in 2014 in its live-action sitcom series Good Luck Charlie.

Disney also showed a possible same-sex couple in the 2013 film Frozen, a much-overhyped gay moment in its 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast film and a same-sex kiss in the background of the Disney Channel’s animated action series Star vs. the Forces of Evil.

Last year, Disney sold a pair of rainbow Mickey Mouse ears as a partial show of support for its LGBTQ visitors. For 12 years it has received a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index of businesses with pro-LGBTQ employee policies.
