Drew and Ted

This week, Queercents hears from Drew & Ted. Their lives are a mixture of Hollywood and Real Estate… two of my favorite topics.

How long have you been together?
Around 2 Years

How did money first come up in your relationship?
Drew: Like most couples, it probably came up while we were dating – sometimes I’d pay for dinner, movie, etc. and sometimes Ted would pay.
Ted: I invited him to move in with me. I wanted him to split the rent.

Checking and savings accounts: Joint or separate?
Joint and separate. Our business account is a joint account.

What is your worst habit around finances?
Drew: I am very conservative in my spending and I always shop around before buying something.
Ted: Drew is keeping better personal finances. I feel our business accounting would be better if he spent as much time doing our business finances as he does his personal finances.

Do you rent or own and how do you divide the bills?
Drew: We rent our loft and we each pay 1/2 of the rent. I pay the cable bill and Ted pays the electric bill.
Ted: We rent a loft in Downtown Los Angeles. He owns a 4-plex.

What is the best gift your mate has ever given you?
Drew: Donovan’s Greatest Hits CD
Ted: He paid off my computer for me. I’ll never forget that one.

Did your parents ever disagree about money? How did they handle it?
Drew: I don’t remember my parents ever disagreeing about money. My Mom paid the bills and did the budgeting.
Ted: I don’t remember lots of disagreements about money.

What is your most significant memory about money?
Drew: Probably that my parents always had enough money to meet our needs. I never remember worrying about money as a child. My parents were very savvy Real Estate Investors.
Trent: I use to steal candy from the candy store. I was so good at it and that scared me. I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior at 16. I stopped stealing at that point. Did I mention Limewire…ooopppsss.

What is success?
Drew: Having enough money to contribute to others and make a difference.
Ted: Success is knowing that my contributions impact my desired communities in the ways I planned they would.

What would you do with your life if money were not a consideration?
Drew: Work for a charitable organization.
Ted: I would be doing something very similar. I also personally own OutoftheClosetTelevision.com. I hope to earn enough money at real estate that I’ll always be able to create whatever I want for that website.

What’s been your worst disagreement around finances?
Drew: I like to think about large purchases before making them.
Ted: We just went through that about 3 hours ago. Drew creates a story about me taking advantage of him. He paid $500 to cover one of my employees one week and I still haven’t paid him back.

What are your plans for retirement?
Drew: I will probably still live in Los Angeles. Travel, help people.
Ted: Own a big home up in the Hollywood Hills and continue to do what I’m currently doing.

How do you pamper each other?
Drew: We treat ourselves to movies, dinner, etc.
Ted: We go to the movies. We watch television shows together. I massage his legs cause he has leg pains and he doesn’t have the patience to massage mine back. So, that’s how I pamper him.
