The event, named Copenhagen 2021, will take place in the Danish capital and neighbouring Swedish city of Malmö in less than three years time, and planning for the first joint event of its kind is already underway. Copenhagen City council has announced a $1 million grant to help cover the cost of planning for the first ever joint celebration of WorldPride and EuroGames in 2021.

“We welcome the support from the City of Copenhagen. This financial backing is instrumental in making Copenhagen 2021 a global and inclusive mega-event for the LGBTQ community”, says Lars Christian Østergreen, CEO of the body organising Copenhagen 2021.

“We have been hard at work to secure this grant, and it will be a tremendous help as we head into the early planning of a massive WorldPride festival, a EuroGames with sporting events in 27 disciplines, a conference focusing on LGBTQ rights around the world and a bunch of other events.”

Copenhagen Pride won their bid to host WorldPride 2021 last year, and the Copenhagen LGBTQ sports organization Pan Idræt won their bid to host EuroGames 2021 earlier this year. This will follow WorldPride 2020 to be held in New York City.

There is no doubt that a combined celebration of WorldPride and EuroGames will empower our global LGBTQ community in our fight for equality. They want this event to be truly inclusive of all the letters in the acronym, and for Copenhagen 2021 to be a platform for activists and athletes from marginalized communities to have their voices heard.

Copenhagen 2021: WorldPride & EuroGames is expected to attract 750,000 visitors during August 12-22, 2021. The event will take place in both Copenhagen and Malmö. You might should start planning now with Pride swag and Travel bookings.

According to the Copenhagen2021 site they reveal that Copenhagen and Malmö will be a rainbow-colored pride party that will exceed your expectations. They plan for a busy eleven days of events such as art exhibitions, music performances, VIP receptions, human rights debates, sporting events and out-of-this-world parties.

2021 marks no less than five anniversaries in Danish LGBTQ history that will be celebrated during this WorldPride:

  • 70th anniversary: The world’s first successful genital reconstructive surgery was performed in Denmark in 1951

  • 50th anniversary: A Danish chapter of the Gay Liberation Front was founded in 1971

  • 40th anniversary: Denmark removed homosexuality from  its official list of mental illnesses in 1981

  • 25th anniversary: The first Copenhagen Pride was celebrated in 1996 when Copenhagen also hosted EuroPride

  • 15th anniversary: Danish lesbians and bisexual women obtained the right to assisted reproduction in 2006

Besides hundreds of cultural events, we plan for WorldPride 2021 to feature an outstanding beach party-style opening ceremony. With more than 10,000 attendees, prominent speakers, an array of musical performances and a unique setting that allows you to frolic in the sand and enjoy a dip in the sea water, this will be an extravaganza!

The Copenhagen City Hall Square will be turned into a global Pride Square! #LGBTQ organizations and NGOs from all over the world will be there to tell spectators about their work and encourage them to join our fight for equality. Pride Square will also be a pulsating backdrop to five days of open-air shows and performances – free of charge!

The WorldPride parade will be an enormous human rights manifestation. With 60,000+ marchers in our parade and 500,000+ spectators, we are uniting the world in a transformative journey to celebrate love and diversity. The inclusivity of Copenhagen will be visible to all marchers as thousands of people will spend an afternoon at their windows and on their balconies, blowing kisses and waving rainbow flags at the parade.
